9000 Boy Scouts...
The University is hosting an event for the Boy Scouts of America. There are literally somewhere between six and nine thousand Boy Scouts of ALL ages in town right now. The kids are being housed in the dorms. The current temperature is 84f, with a 75%(!) humidity level. It's literally like breathing soup out there. I know. I just got back from the library. The ventilation in the dorms is being "maintenanced". There is NO airconditioning in them. Those brave boys are building CHARACTER right now. By the time this week is over, several of them will qualify as russian novels. | | Sunday, July 23rd, 2006 | | 2:34 am |
Tonight #1
So far tonight... One gentleman to whom I had to explain twice how to get to the bathroom, who then proceeded to walk past it, and couldn't find it when I called out to tell him he'd just walked past it. One young lady who walked in the front door, came up to the desk and asked me where the front door of the hotel was. One gentleman who walked up to the desk and asked me where the lobby was. And three rooms that have been calling each other all night long. Room 305 wants me to transfer them to room 601. Room 601 wants me to transfer them to room 201. Room 201 wants me to transfer them to room 305. And I can't tell them to just call the room number directly because they don't know what room the people they want to talk to are in because they never actually get a hold of the room they're trying to talk to. And not one of them has thought to leave a voicemail message telling their friend to call them. | | Monday, June 19th, 2006 | | 6:15 am |

My latest conspiracy theory...
OK, remember back in the eighties, when there was that daycare scare, about Satanic cults operating out of daycare centers, and children being sacrificed, and what not? It came at a very bad time, at a point when women were actively pushing to make daycare a standard benefit at workplaces. It didn't quite kill the drive on it's own, but it did do a lot of damage to the idea. Now, today, we've got this phantom of pedophilia. I am not attempting to lessen the horror of a real phenomenon, having been molested as a child myself, but what I'm seeing is that the word is being bandied about constantly. It feels like there's a drive to get the word out there as much as possible, in order to make people unnaturally nervous about everyone that comes near their child. Which means that people aren't as willing to trust their children with other adults. Which means that women have to stay at home, in order to keep their children safe from encroaching pedophilia. And it's a much better attempt than the previous one, which generated a lot of hot air in a very short amount of time. This is much more subtle, and has much more staying power, and a greater ability to do serious harm, since more people are likely to take it seriously. Of course, I'm firmly convinced that if you don't think the country's being run by a vast right wing conspiracy, you're not really paying attention. | | Saturday, July 16th, 2005 | | 6:11 am |
How many housekeepers would a woodchuck chuck?
So, the other day, two of our housekeepers, fine, upstanding young men who are both originally from Detroit, and so not used to being out here in the country, had a spot of trouble. They were sent to go fetch some boxes from the "cage" out in the parking ramp. When they got to the cage, however, they found it occupied... by a feasome beast, both hairy and fanged. Being fine, upstanding young men from Detroit, they had never actually encounted such a beast, known locally as a woodchuck. Stumbling upon the lair of this beast, the two young men were quite frightened, and spurred into running in terror. In some fashion, they each managed to circle in different directions, and their paths of flight did, quite suddenly, and with a fearsome smacking sound, intersect. Both men are temporarily out of work, as one has a good sized goose egg on his forehead, and the other might possibly have a broken cheekbone. This is actually a good thing, as it will give the rest of us time to get over having the giggles everytime we see one of them. | | Friday, July 15th, 2005 | | 8:20 am |
